Compartment C, Car 293

The heedless traveller takes her ease
In C compartment’s watery green,
Oblivious to art’s mysteries.

The landscape that the viewer sees
This girl thinks better left unseen.
The heedless traveller takes her ease.

The setting sun beyond the trees
Ignored, she scans a magazine,
Oblivious to art’s mysteries.

The train will bend ninety degrees
To cross that bridge; how it will lean!
The heedless traveller takes her ease.

On bridge and cheek the light agrees
With nothing else; but she’s serene,
Oblivious to art’s mysteries.

The journal open on her knees
Holds no clue to the troubling scene.
The heedless traveller takes her ease
Oblivious to art’s mysteries.
