Couplets

Such a lovely pair you make,
Would not you part for heaven’s sake!

Long ago I met you, in my infancy,
Both at my table, close to me.

One would be lost without t’other,
More than a sister and a brother.

In duet singing the victuals song
You seem to always get along.

I’ve dined with you for every meal,
Lashings of you, ground with zeal.

You make English breakfasts more refined,
Finesse a lunch, make all well dined.

You are a very social couple
Adding taste to sooth life’s trouble.

You come in many shapes and sizes,
Colours, material and guises.

In Italians you attain monstrous proportions
Avoiding kleptomaniac misfortunes.

Formerly refined – more lately coarse –
We’re now advised you make health worse!

You rely upon each other, kith and kin
Through life’s sauces, thick or thin.

O my god who are you?! Yes, I knew it!
Salt and pepper – you’re a cruet!

  1. I admit that I didn’t catch a word of this at the meeting thanks to my poor hearing. Very clever David and most enjoyable with an appropriate theme of course.

    1. Thanks Ken!
Great to get praise from an accomplished poet.
And thanks for your contributions yesterday*. It was a lovely and fitting occasion.
