Mother Shipton’s

Many’s the time we’ve heard the poetry read

On second Tuesdays in the quiet room,

The theme would change in light of what was said,

Happy to meet before the days of Zoom.

Each would have poems to share with all the rest,

Rumi, Hopkins, Larkin, Tennyson and Plath,

So then we’d choose the one that pleased us best

Having first been read by Chris, Dave or Kath.

It seems so long ago such things went on,

Perhaps we took it all for granted then,

The literary background given us by John

Or Yorkshire dialect spoken loud by Ken.

‘ Nil desperandum’ so the Latin says

Sure that soon we will have happier days.

  1. Sums up the moment beautifully, I’ll refer to this in the future as it captures our time, our little circle poised between the norms, old and new.
