Tumultuous winds assail our creaking ship,
Headlong we race down towering cliffs of wave
Envisaging a grim and gloomy grave
Where giant octopuses wait to grip
In hungry clutches each descending soul.
No respite from the lashing hurricane,
Endurance near exhausted, fevered brain
Distraught, with no iota of control.
At length the mainmast starts to sway and flex,
Refracted by the shredding sails, as we
Kneel praying to the gods beneath the decks…
Serener waters shelter in the lee
Evvia affords, and breaking through the haze,
Aegean sun with its reviving rays.
