Tarantella 2020

Do you remember an inn, Miranda?

Do you remember an inn?

A bar where we’d meet and chat,

Savour the drink and craic,

Where we’d recite

On a Thursday night

Our trove of the poets,

Well-loved or discovered,

Do you remember?

The Hardy, the Larkin,

The Hughes and the Hardy,

Tennyson, Dickinson,

Rumi,

Heaney,

Plath and Rossetti,

Various Thomases, Herbert and Goethe,

Duffy – Donne – Dante,

Hopkins and Hardy?

And the erudition

Of John’s exposition

Of the feats and fates of Keats and Yeats,

Wordsworth and Whitman, Eliot and Dylan?

The styles metaphysical,

Ballad and lyrical,

Epic and epigram,

Comic, polemical?

And the charms of the rhymes

Of our own bard of Barnsley –

Do you remember, Miranda?

Vaguely. It’s so long ago. Remind me, what’s an inn?
