How is it Bach pervades the depths
That other music rarely sounds?
To me, it gives not joy, not ecstasy,
Not satisfaction, calm contentment,
Cathartic grief, nor happiness,
But makes its own unique affect,
A coalescence of all these and more.
As if he’d found out the genetic code
And replicated it in notes and patterns,
A third helix of sound, an elixir
Coiling through the very stuff of me.
