This poem has no form to the uni(n)formed
I wrote it on form in form at uni
A two-piece uniform!
A twin-set set in two verses.
Nice pair.
Always preferred separates.
Wise cracks in the gaps
Pearls of wit adorn lines’
Unmetered uniform.
All uniforms are equal
But some are more equal than others
There’s no uniformity.
Form is uniform
A poem wears an outfit
Is contained by its garb by which it garbles
Sometimes a costume designs to mislead
When is a uniform not a uniform?
At what point exactly does a uniform form?
An outer outer skin, a fusion of subject and object
A symbol of the illusion of separation,
The reality of division?
Uniformity of white
The unbounded page
Dispersed into coloured splinters
That are always this season’s fashion.
My language is a uniform
I wore slang yesterday; Radio 4 today
In Italy I wear ill fitting Italian phrases
My voice likes dressing up in French
But I’m not convincing
I put on German the other day for a laugh
I can’t squeeze into Chinese.
It’s all foreign to me.
I can squeeze a mandarin
In an orange uniform.
Sometimes I rid myself of the tyranny
But then speak of my birthday suit
Regrettably it suits me.
We wear houses – sometimes ill-fitting – and dress rooms.
The houses in our street are not uniform.
Last night the sky dressed up in glitter
With a giant sparkly hat
I put on a cape and flapped like a bat.
My car wears red because it likes to feel racy
One day I will dress it up in lights
Flashing Dave and Dawn
In uniform.
Where do avatars shop? Online?
My cat picks catfur everyday. It never wears out.
Which is a good thing because she’s a funny size.
Can’t get away with ‘off the peg’.
In fact, can’t getaway – she’s hemmed by a fence.
My hair is any style I like. It is imaginary.

I said I can’t afford that.
I once wore a luftwaffe costume in Didsbury.
A uniform too far.
That’s no uniform – it’s fancy dress (they twigged)
Shouting in syllables of uniform pitch and attitude.
They made an announcement on the train
Advising passengers to report
Anything that doesn’t look right.
I said the driver’s uniform.
They said they are short of drivers.
I said I’m not surprised.
